Armed with litter pickers, gloves and jute bags we took to the beach alongside other local Gower businesses to clean up the aftermath of fireworks night across Swansea Bay. After clearing hundreds of discarded cans, sparklers, bottle tops and firework debris, we warmed up with complimentary hot chocolates from The Secret Swansea- happy with our efforts to change our corner of the world.
#OceanPlasticToFantastic is a project by Smile Plastic, Surfability and CWM Environmental that aims to collect ocean plastic to create something useful and redirect as much waste as possible from landfill. We added our efforts alongside Swansea University students and Surfers Against Sewage reps to save the mess of November 5th from being washed in the sea.
Cleaning just one beach from a night's worth of rubbish doesn’t feel like much when you look at the wider environmental issues our planet is facing. But, as with everything, you have to start somewhere and oftentimes it’s the daily choices and simple decisions that have a prolonged impact.
For example, back in the summer we changed our 12 and 8 case bottle packaging to a 100% plastic free alternative. We’ve moved away from using single use plastic on all our bottle orders, so now when you purchase a case of your favourite Gower Brewery bev, it comes safely snuggled in cardboard which can be easily recycled (or made into a rocketship or fort…)
Our mini keg containers are also climate neutral. This means that the carbon footprint of our mini kegs has been calculated on the basis of internationally recognised standards and fully offset by supporting international climate action projects. By purchasing a mini keg from us, you not only get 5 litres of Gower Brewery goodness but also offset CO2 emissions and support the generation of hydro power developments in DR Congo.
With all the hustle of COP26 coming to an end in Glasgow, it’s a timely moment to take stock of our daily choices and often the small alternatives that can make a noticeable difference.
Thank you so much to everyone who came out in the freezing cold wind to help! And a huge thank you to The Secret for warming us up with drinks afterwards. Keep an eye on our social media channels for more organised beach cleans.
